Royal Canoe preview upcoming album with new single ‘Living A Lie’

Royal Canoe - Living A LieWe’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of Royal Canoe‘s new album Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit, which follows their excellent 2013 album Today We’re Believers. The Winnipeg based sextet had already shared the colourful first single ‘Somersault’, and they’ve just shared another stunning taste from the forthcoming record called ‘Living A Lie’. Here’s what the band’s Matt Peters had to say:

“On the new record we spent a lot of time manipulating organic sounds with elaborate pedal chains and effects loops that we later ran into sampling devices. The goal was to create libraries of sounds that felt somewhat alien, but that still had a familiar “skin” on them and that we could play like a real instrument. On “Living a Lie” the organ, vocals, sax, and a bunch of the drums were all created with this approach. The rhythms in the song are also caught in a similar space between two worlds, with both analog and digital kits playing against each other. The chorus’ have a triplet feel, but the versus’ are so lazy they exist right between swung and straight – Like a constant push & pull. All of this rhythmic interplay is so the song could have the deep sexiness of a slow jam, but with a desperate frenetic energy. We wrote this song while a couple of us were still hung up on old flames and finding it difficult to disengage. It’s about realizing how much you subconsciously manipulate your plans and routines in an attempt to be closer to somebody you can’t get over. And then trying to come to terms with how much of your identity is indebted to their presence in your life and whether or not you even want to let go.”

Take a listen to ‘Living A Lie’ now.

In other related news, Royal Canoe have announced a huge tour with dates all across North America for the rest of the year.

Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit is out on September 16th via Nevado Music worldwide, Embassy of Music in Europe and Moorworks in Japan.
