Three years on from the release of Mess, Liars have a new album on the way, entitled TFCF and set for release on August 25th via Mute. TFCF, which stands for Theme From Crying Fountain, sees Liars re-emerge as the solo project of singer and guitarist Angus Andrew, following the amicable departure of Aaron Hemphill. Recorded in Andrew’s native Australia, where he had moved back to to live in a remote part, the album is informed by his new surrounding and life style. He explains:

“Suddenly, the tides of the ocean became the most important thing to me, because I live right on the ocean now, and to get my boat out in the morning to get groceries on the mainland I’ve got to know when the tide is coming in, or I’ll get stuck. Very basic things like that suddenly became top priority in my life. And the effect was interesting. The last record, Mess, was made in LA, and had very tight corners and clean edges – it was sharp, programmed, organised. It sounds a lot like living in a city. But now, everything started to fall off-time.”

Ahead of TFCF‘s release, Liars has shared the first single from it, ‘Cred Woes’, and we can’t stop playing it. Here it is.

To celebrate the release of TFCF, Liars will hit the road this Summer and Autumn with a new touring band. With several live dates in Europe and North America, the tour kicks off at London’s VISIONS Festival on August 5th and includes a show at Utrecht’s Le Guess Who? Festival in November. Check their website for all dates and other info.

Liars premiere video for ‘Mess on a Mission’

Liars - Mess on a Mission

Liars’ new album, Mess, came out last week and we must admit, we are addicted to it. The album’s frantic and excellent lead single, ‘Mess on a Mission’, has just been complimented with a weirdly apocalyptic and funny video. Luis Cervéro directs. Watch it now.

Mess is out now via Mute.

Liars announce new album and drop lead single

Liars - Mess on a Mission

Liars‘s latest album, WIXIW, came out in 2012 and it became a regular listening pick here at CTD. We’re thrilled to know they are ready to release the follow-up to WIXIW in just a couple of months. Mess will see the light of day on March 24th in the UK/Europe and March 25th in the USA via Mute.
As the press released describes, Mess “is Liars with their balls out – an angry, ecstatic, primal burst of ritualistic electronics that sacrifices self persecution for potent, purposeful abandon”. Singer and guitarist Angus Andrew, who also took on production duties for the album, explains:

“We are a reactionary, or maybe a better word is schizophrenic band. We go from one extreme to the other. Working on the last record was really doubtful and paranoid, and that’s fine, but it just meant that when work started on this one, it was the exact opposite. It was way more instinctual, fun and confident.”

Ahead of the album’s release, Liars are releasing the lead single ‘Mess On A Mission’ on March 18th. I first heard this track live last summer when the threesome premiered some new material at Primavera Sound Festival in Porto and it remains an unforgettable highlight. Even with my pretty badly sprained ankle, Liars’ tremendous live show and infectious sound made me dance till I dropped.
‘Mess On a Mission’ is an excellent, frantic and insane track. Play it loud and play it often, and watch the album trailer straight after.

Liars give away two new tracks ahead of European tour

Liars - I Saw You From The Lifeboat

Here’s a treat from Liars, in anticipation of their European tour. They are offering two brand new tracks, ‘I Saw You From The Lifeboat’ and ‘Perfume Tear’, as a free download in exchange for an email.
Singer and guitarist Angus Andrew explains how these new cuts came about:

“After releasing WIXIW and returning home from touring there was a palpable sense of creative relief and release. We relished in the opportunity to make stuff under no real directive and began almost immediately to produce all kinds of unrelated works. It’s a great position to be in creatively so we decided to share a small portion of the results with you today. Both of these songs happened almost instantly, and, in sharp contrast to the music we produced for WIXIW, were not labored over or scrutinized. It’s been great for us to recall the immediacy and excitement of creating music on the fly – unrestricted by subject matter and void of preoccupations about how it should ‘work’ in the greater context of things.”

Liars have also made a video for ‘I Saw You From The Lifeboat’, featuring an amalgamation of footage documenting their past few years. Watch it now.

Liars premiere new video for ‘The Exact Color Of Doubt ‘

Liars - The Exact Color Of Doubt

We’ve grown accustomed to seeing interesting and weird videos accompanying some of the songs from Liars. Their latest visual effort was debuted earlier today for ‘Exact Color of Doubt’, the slice of mesmerising ambience that opens the threesome’s sixth studio album WIXIW, released last summer via Mute.

Director Markus Wambsganss, who had previously collaborated with Liars, described the video as “3D Screen Test Scans in the Villa Straylight”. He added that the video is “a continuation of what the band and I started together with ‘The Other Side Of Mt. Heart Attack’, this time using a hacked Kinect sensor to scan their upper bodies to match the more digital feel WIXIW”.

Here’s the video for ‘Exact Color of Doubt’.
