Mixtape #130

We're big fans of Run Logan Run, the adventurous duo of Andrew Neil Hayes (saxophones and FX) and Matt Brown (drums and percussion). Based in Bristol and born out of a shared passion for improvisation, spiritual jazz and heavier experimental music, they are versatile and talented musicians who push the boundaries of jazz. Their upcoming and much anticipated third album, For A Brief Moment We Could Smell The Flowers, captures perfectly their energy and their intense, inventive, intricate and exhilarating sound. We asked them to put together a mix of some of the artists and bands that inspire them and we're thrilled to start September with this superb selection of tracks. So be sure to grab their new album when it comes out later this month, and right now, press play and enjoy the ride!

Mixtape #95

We shimmy our way into May with a mixtape put together by Vula Viel's beating heart, Bex Burch. Now a trio, they blend Ghanaian musical traditions with electronica, jazz and myriad other elements to make intoxicatingly joyous and entrancingly rhythmic tracks. Here's what she had to say about her mix:

"Most of the music which has inspired me is unrecorded, it was played and seeped into me through my skin in real life, physical, tactile contact, along with the smells and feels and peoples and life. My recorded influences are pretty limited and still very much from many years ago, although I'm listening to music again now as I'm back to 'school' in writing. I definitely don't know what's "cool" but here's some songs which move me. Currently on my record player is Oté Maloya - The Birth of electric Maloya on Réunion Island."

  1. Caméléon – La Rosée Si Feuilles Songes [Diffusion Royale]
  2. Oren Marshall & The Charming Transport Band – Just Get Over It [F-IRE]
  3.  Led Zeppelin – Good Times Bad Times [Atlantic]
  4.  Nirvana – Where Did You Sleep Last Night [Matl CRash / Octopus]
  5.  Joni Mitchell – A Case Of You [Reprise]
  6.  Brian Finnegan – Marga’s [Singing Tree Music ]
  7. Steve Reich – Reich: Sextet – Mvt. #3 [Nonesuch]
  8. Steve Reich – Reich: Sextet – Mvt. #4 [Nonesuch]

Mixtape #69

Leeds based quartet Fold makes music that is socially conscious and resonates with the world's issues, struggles and injustices. Also, it's groovy as hell! As this mixtape shows, they're inspired by a variety of different genres, from jazz, downtempo and hip-hop to funk and psychedelic rock. We still can't put down their debut album which was one of our picks of 2015. So it's with great pleasure that we present this month's mixtape with songs handpicked by Fold's frontman Seth Mowshowitz:

"The selection of tracks is very personal and reflects what I believe is the highest bar of emotional expression in my own experience of music. Each one is an indelible part of my history and I can clearly remember everything about the moment I heard them for the first time. They have without exception stood the test of time remaining utmost in my musical affections."
