Serengeti set to release surprise album With Greg From Deerhoof tomorrow

Much to our suprise and fortune, Chicago rap experimentalist David Cohn aka Serengeti has revealed he has a new album coming out tomorrow October 29th. The record is a collaboration with Deerhoof’s drummer and composer Greg Saunier and is aptly titled With Greg from Deerhoof. In the summer of 2018, nearly a decade after they first met when Serengeti opened for Deerhoof at a Chicago show, the two were at the PEOPLE residency in Berlin and they both happened to sign up for the same slot in one of the recording studios. With nothing prepared in advance, the pair performed ‘I Got Your Password’ to a small audience, including recording engineer Jonas Verwijnen and a few other musicians. Greg got the audio recording earlier this year and sent it to Serengeti, who decided to make a full-length album. As a superb taster for With Greg From Deerhoof, Serengeti has shared two fine singles, ‘Wasps’ and ‘Première’. Take a listen now.

With Greg From Deerhoof is out on October 29th through Joyful Noise Recordings.

Serengeti set to release new album as Kenny Dennis

Serengeti - Kenny Dennis III

Chicago rap experimentalist David Cohn aka Serengeti has a new album coming out. Comes November 11th, the man will unveil the continued saga of his alter-ego Kenny Dennis with the release of Kenny Dennis III. If you’re not familiar with the character, he’s “a cross between Ron Swanson, a Bill Swerski superfan, and the best Golden Age rapper that you never heard”, as the press release describes. “Kenny Dennis is the most whimsical, hilarious, and strangely poignant fictional character in hip-hop history—a true blue collar hero of modernity.”
Serengeti first brought Kenny Dennis to life in 2006 and years on, the upcoming album sees Kenny Dennis going through a mid-life crisis. At the same time, he forms a rap group, Perfecto, with long-time rap partner, Ders (Anders Holm from Workaholics) who narrates their tales across the Midwest.
The record was produced by Odd Nosdam and it’s coming out via Joyful Noise Recordings.
‘No Beginner’ serves as an excellent taste of what Serengeti is throwing our way. Listen to it below.

Serengeti contributes to Graveface Records’ Charity Subscription Series

Graveface Records is putting out a Charity Subscription Series featuring exclusive new tracks from artists and bands like Dosh, Xiu Xiu, Mount Eerie, Mike Watt, Appleseed Cast, Shearwater and many more.

Here’s how Graveface Records explained the origin of the idea:

“The idea for the Charity series was hatched in 2010 when I lost a great amount of my stock in a flood. Many amazing folks donated loot to get me out of that hole.  I was so inspired by their generosity that I asked some musician friends to contribute to the project. Two years later and we’re ready to go. So the idea is simple: amazing bands, awesome music that’s exclusive to each release, fun colored vinyl, and most importantly, a large chunk of the profits hitting charities of each artists choosing.”

You can find out more and order the records here.

The first release of this series comes from the hands of Chicago rap experimentalist David Cohn aka Serengeti, who is also one-half of rap duo Serengeti & Polyphonic and one-third of indie trio S/S/S featuring Sufjan Stevens and Son Lux.  Serengeti teamed up with Tobacco to deliver ‘Be a Man’, available on August 28th. The profits from this release will be donated to RBI: Reviving Baseball In Inner Cities.
