There’s no stopping Yonatan Gat, and thank goodness for that. In addition to the recent release of Director, his debut album, and several live shows in Europe and North America with his trio, the inventive and prolific guitar virtuoso has a brand new release out. It includes an unreleased A-Side from Director, ‘Ascension’, and B-Side ‘Analog Gold Rush’ lifted from Gat’s upcoming Steve Albini engineered EP.
The release comes on a lathe-cut CD, a new hybrid format that can be played both on a turntable and in a CD player, one song for each format.
The record sold out in no time, but it’s also available digitally on his bandcamp. Now listen to ‘Analog Gold Rush’.
Yonatan Gat got us salivating last month when he dropped ‘Goldrush‘, the first single off the upcoming full-length album Director. The album will hit stores on March 3rd via Joyful Noise Recordings. To keep us excited, the composer and guitar virtuoso is giving us another taste from the album, with ‘North To South‘, a Carnival of a song with lyrics sang in English, Portuguese and Hebrew. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo Cotonou, Orchestra Baobab and Bembeya Jazz are some of the Western African bands quoted as influences on the guitar work on ‘North To South‘. Get dancing.
In other related good new, Yonatan Gat has announced a North American tour supporting of Montreal and Deerhoof in March, and also appearances at SXSW. Check out all the tour dates below.
Yonatan Gat is ready to follow up his debut EP, Iberian Passage, released last year. A full-length album, entitled Director, arrives on March 3rd via Joyful Noise Recordings.
The New York-by-way-of-Tel-Aviv composer and guitar virtuoso doesn’t really rely on overdubbing and Director is again an intense and improvisational affair drawing from many genres and roots from across the world. “Inspired by soundtrack virtuosos like Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota”, as the press release describes, “Director is a cinematic circular journey around the music of the world, East to West and North to South. This journey is interconnected by field recordings that Gat has taken during his travels, lending it a feeling of space and time, with a certain directionality.”
‘Goldrush’ is the first taste being offered from the upcoming album. Take a listen below.
Iberian Passage, the debut EP from New York-by-way-of-Tel-Aviv composer and guitarist Yonatan Gat, of Monotonix fame, is being reissued on CD and white vinyl. The EP, which was first released last May via Joyful Noise Recordings, came to life after Gat played in a festival in Portugal where he met Portuguese drummer Igor Domingues (Throes + the Shine). The pair began to collaborate and Gat moved to Porto temporarily, and ended up recording Iberian Passage at Estúdios Sá da Bandeira. Inspired by Brazilian psychedelic experimentalists Os Mutantes and African ensembles such as Orchestra Baobab, Iberian Passage is a tropical and frenetic improvisational affair.
To celebrate this re-release, Yonatan Gat will embark on a European tour next week, with a stop in London on November 19th at The Shacklewell Arms. Head over here to check all the other live dates.
What’s more, the EP comes with an ace brand new song, ‘East to West’, and you can listen to it now.
