Mixtape #181

We’ve had a soft spot for St. Barbe ever since they landed on our radar. The London trio of James Maltby, Edwin Ireland and Floyer Sydenham have been steadily carving out their own lane in the UK’s jazz scene since 2021, honing a sound that threads together contemporary jazz, punk, math rock, hip-hop, electronica, and a wide range of other influences. Their self-produced debut EP Shapeless introduced a band unafraid of complexity, and with the recent Shoal EP, released last February, they continue to refine a sound that feels both meticulously constructed and alive in the moment, pairing technical ability with genre flexibility. We’re beyond excited to have St. Barbe at the helm of this month’s mixtape, with a selection of tracks exploring the myriad influences that help shape their own music. Press play and enjoy.

Mahuki is the creation of Czech-born, Edinburgh-based guitar virtuoso and composer Honza Kourimsky, who’s one of the most exciting talents to emerge on the Scottish jazz scene. Last month Mahuki released his new album, Gratitude, an intricate and stunning fusion record stemming from his personal experiences and musical upbringing, deftly navigating influences from contemporary jazz and Eastern European folk music to progressive funk and rock. We asked Honza to put together a mixtape with some of the artists and bands that have inspired him and we're thrilled to unveil the splendid mix he sent us. Enjoy!

Kneebody announce new album Chapters

Adventurous American collective Kneebody are set to release their new album Chapters on October 18th through Edition Records. The album, which was mixed and mastered by the band´s drummer Nate Wood at his New York Kerseboom Studio, features 10 tracks and includes guest appearances from Becca Stevens, Gretchen Parlato, Michael Mayo and Josh Dion. With a new line-up marking a new chapter, the band continue to defy pigeonholing and charge through 2019. The brilliant and blistering lead single ‘Spectra’ is proof of that.
