Chicago’s legendary quintet Tortoise have a new album on the way, following 2009’s Beacons of Ancestorship. Entitled The Catastrophist, the album’s first came to life in 2010, when the City of Chicago commissioned the group “to compose a suite of music rooted in its ties to the area’s noted jazz and improvised music communities”. The band’s Jeff Parker explained that they reworked and restructured all of the songs quite heavily. “We actually had quite a lot of material that we ended up giving up on. Oftentimes, we’ll shelve ideas and come back to them years later.”
‘Gesceap’ serves as the album’s first taste ahead of its release on January 22nd via Thrill Jockey. Here it is.
