OY tease new album with first single ‘A New Planet Is Born’

OY - A New Planet Is Born

We’ve been hooked on OY‘s sounds and stories since we came across their 2014 album No Problem Saloon. So much so that back then, we invited Joy Frempong and Lleluja-Ha, who make up the outfit, to curate our monthly mixtape.
So we’re pleased to know they are getting ready to release a new album called Space Diaspora. Unlike their previous album, informed by the band’s travels in Africa, Space Diaspora finds the Berlin based duo soaring into a futuristic land. “They were accidentally projected into the future, on a planet named Space Diaspora, inhabited and terraformed by former earthlings”, says the press release. “Over there, OY discovered strange customs and lifestyles, interesting political processes, artistic practices and unheard-of sounds, which inspired them to write this new album.”

Space Diaspora arrives in September via Crammed Discs but we can already get a taste of what they’ll be throwing at us with the wonderful first single ‘A New Planet Is Born’. It comes with a video made by artist collective Zeitguised. Watch it now.

Mixtape #53

The Berlin based duo Oy, made up of Swiss-Ghanian multi-instrumentalist Joy Frempong and drummer / producer Lleluja-Ha, are a treat of a band and we've been hooked on their sounds ever since we first heard them. Oy offer a rich and intoxicating blend of music genres, from electronic and soul to jazz and African music, laced with Joy's engaging and quirky storytelling. So we've asked them to take us on an tour of the sounds that have inspired them and the resulting mixtape below is further evidence of just how versatile they are with genres.

Oy release debut album No Problem Saloon

Oy - Market Place

Swiss-Ghanian vocalist Joy Frempong and drummer/producer Lleluja-Ha make up the kaleidoscopic outfit Oy based out of Berlin. Having released their debut album earlier this year in Europe, No Problem Saloon is now also being released in North America on June 24th via Crammed Discs
The album is inspired and influenced by Joy´s travels to Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana and South Africa where “she met scores of people, listened to proverbs, heard stories, and collected bits of field recordings”, before returning to the studio in Berlin, as the press release explains.

The effervescent ‘Market Place’ was the first single to be extracted form the album and it comes with a video directed by King Luu and shot in Accra, Ghana. Here it is.
