Perhaps Contraption detail upcoming album and share video for new single ‘Droplets / Molecules’

Perhaps ContraptionAfter last year’s excellent single ‘Lay Low’, we’ve been eagerly waiting for news of a new album from London based 9-piece Perhaps Contraption and they’ve finally announced its release. Mud Belief is due out on June 3rd via Grabby Claw. Infused with diverse styles and references from each of the nine members, the upcoming effort draws influences from post-minimalism, jazz, contemporary classical, and avant-rock. For a taste of what they’ll be throwing at us, Perhaps Contraption have shared the effervescent and exuberant ‘Droplets / Molecules’ and it comes with a fabulous fitting video. The troupe’s artistic director and piccolo/flute player Christo Squier had this to say about the track:

“Droplets/Molecules condenses the troupe’s love for post-minimalism, progressive rock and science, into a detailed, brass-fuelled flurry. Shot entirely on GoPros, it shows what it’s like to ‘ride’ upon our instruments.

The lyrics evoke fascination on a molecular and subatomic level – the ever-shifting discoveries being made about the smallest building blocks of matter. We wanted the musicality, particularly the woodwind at the end, to reflect that somehow.”

Check out the bubbly video for ‘Droplets / Molecules’ below.

Perhaps Contraption are celebrating the release of Mud Belief with a launch show at London’s Rich Mix on May 12th. The troupe is also reportedly plotting a London street tour that will include spontaneous performances in unusual public spaces around the city.

Jherek Bischoff announces new album Cistern and shares title track

Jherek Bischoff - CisternThe immensely talented multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Jherek Bischoff conquered our ears in 2012 with his magnificent debut album Composed, which was one of our Album Picks then.
We’re pleased to know he is ready to release a brand new album called Cistern. As the title suggests, Bischoff conceived the album in an empty two million gallon underground water tank, here he spent time improvising. Cistern reflects its inception space, which, according to the press release, “forced Bischoff to slow down, to reflect, to draw on his childhood growing up on a sailing boat – an unexpected journey of rediscovery, from the city back to the Pacific Ocean via the Cistern.”.
To bring the record to life, Bischoff has also enlisted the help of incredible New York ensemble Contemporaneous.

Cistern will see the light of day on July 15th via The Leaf Label. To get us enticed ahead of it, Bischoff has shared the majestic, poignant and introspective title track. Play it loud and on repeat.

Listen to Kikagaku Moyo’s new single ‘Green Sugar’

Kikagaku MoyoWe’re just over two weeks away form the release of House In The Tall Grass, the new album from Kikagaku Moyo. The Tokyo five-piece have been teasing the album with a series of singles and ‘Green Sugar’ is the latest cut to emerge from their forthcoming album. The song “was inspired by a morning walk”, said drummer Go Kurosawa. “It’s in three parts, expressing first a blizzard, then a gentle stroll in the woods finding birds, foxes and squirrels, and finally a descent into a bottomless cave.”
Listen to it below and watch out for the album release on May 13th via Guruguru Brain.

Holy Fuck unleash video for ‘Tom Tom’

Holy Fuck - Tom TomWe’re beyond excited about Holy Fuck‘s upcoming album and we haven’t really been shy about it since they’ve announced it in February. Congrats, the follow-up to 2010’s Latin, is their first album in six years and it arrives on May 27th via Innovative Leisure and Last Gang.
The Canadian quartet had previously shared the mighty and blistering lead single,‘Tom Tom’, and now they’re offering a video for it. Shot in Romania, the effort was directed by Michael Leblanc, who had this to say about it:

“Brian and I decided to shoot the video in Romania so we could cast authentic people in a unfamiliar setting. I wanted to shoot most of the scenes when the sky was just about to fade and use as much natural light as possible. This helped with the surreal style I was trying to create. Though…we did end up using a few lights and a homemade dolly we built in Romania with wheels I ordered from the US.

I was lucky to have my Romanian friend Miruna Soiu who helped produce/translate and her husband Ian Mcgettigan who’s one of my best friends who helped with all things including being the dolly grip and doing most of the driving. Myself, the two of them and my girlfriend Erika Lobko who’s a local set designer from Toronto flew over. There we found our two main characters and now friends Marius Staicu senior and his son Marius. They were perfect in every way. Everything I had hoped for and way more really. Casting was really fun as we just walked around Zarnesti and asked people if they’d like to be in a music video. We shot most of the video in Sirnia a small village near Brasov where both Ian and Miruna had once stayed. It was through their contacts that we were able to do this video. Without them and Erika who ended up operating on many shots the video would have never been made. Miruna’s wonderful Aunt Iona cooked us traditional Romanian meals every day and woke up really early every morning and lit the heaters to make sure we were warm and cozy.”
