Sarah Neufeld announces new album and unveils first track ‘The Ridge’

Sarah Neufeld - The Ridge

We’re a little bit more than excited to hear about the upcoming new album from Montréal based extraordinary composer and violinist Sarah Neufeld. Her outstanding debut album, Hero Brother, came out in 2013, and she followed it earlier this year with a staggering collaborative album with sax wizard Colin Stetson. Comes February 26th, Neufeld will unveil her new album The Ridge via Paper Bag Records.

The Ridge “is a body of work that sees Neufeld moving away from Hero Brother’s classical minimalism and sepulchral ambience, and into the world of rhythmic pop minimalism”, says the press release. “The new album employs more emphasis on vocalizations than Neufeld’s previous works; the interplay between Neufeld’s voice and violin has become strongly integrated and narrative.”

We’re not sure Neufeld will be employing her incredible foot-stomping technique in any of the album tracks. Percussion is in good hands though, with Neufeld bringing in Jeremy Gara, her bandmate in Arcade Fire, to guest on drums.

The magnificent title track, ‘The Ridge’, opens the album and is now being offered as the first taster of what’s to come – it’s intense and fragile, haunting and calming, poignant and beautiful – a grand opus of a song. Here it is.

Soulsavers set to release new album, Kubrick, next month

Soulsavers - Kubrick

Soulsavers, the outfit of Rich Machin and Ian Glover, have a new instrumental album on the way. Entitled Kubrick, the album is inspired and named after the iconic director. “Like a lot of people, I have phases of obsession, whether it’s about albums, musicians or film directors”, explained Machin. “A while ago, I quite casually started revisiting some of Stanley Kubrick’s films, and pretty soon I was watching them all. I found myself really relishing Kubrick’s amazing attention to detail and how each film had it’s own completely unique mood. I’d wanted to make an instrumental record for ages… I found I could draw on these different moods as starting points for the music.”

Kubrick was self-produced and recorded at several studios around the world and it arrives on December 4th via San Quentin. Ahead of it, Soulsavers have let loose ‘Clay’, the first cinematic and wonderful taster of the upcoming album. As with the other seven tracks on the album, which take their name from a different character from Kubrick’s films, ‘Clay’ is named after Johnny Clay from the 1956 film The Killing. Give it a listen now.

Fold drop new single ‘She’ from eponymous debut album

Fold - Fold

November kicked off with the much anticipated debut album release from Leeds based quartet Fold. They’ve conquered our ears a while back, with their unique confluence of sounds from jazz and hip-hop to funk and psychedelic rock, merged with their social consciousness. Fold use vocal samples from speeches from Martin Luther King, Fannie Lou Hamer and Michael C Ruppert, to name but a few, as a way of conveying their messages which resonate deeply with contemporary issues and struggles.

“These are truths that we piece together from fragments as we move through life. These are truths that need bringing to light in order for us to collectively overcome obstacles.”

Today sees the release of their new excellent single ‘She’, with words written and performed by Brooklyn’s 6% poet. Listen to it below and straight after watch the video for Fold’s previous single ‘A Victim’s Mentality’.

In other related news, and in support of the album, Fold have embarked on a UK tour which culminates this Saturday with a sold out show at Surya in London.

Fold is out now and available on vinyl, CD and digitally through bandcamp.
