Holy Fuck unveil brand new track ‘Ninety Five’

Canadian quartet Holy Fuck have been one of our absolute favorite bands since forming in 2004 and new music from them always put us in a state of joyous excitement. The outfit of Brian Borcherdt, Graham Walsh, Matt McQuaid and Matt Schulz have shared a brand new track called ‘Ninety Five’. The track is “is the sound of drums literally collapsing under their own weight”, as the accompanying blurb describes. It “is the number on a gondola suspended in space. It’s the new number by a band floating in their spaces. spacing, spaced out.”

‘Ninety Five’ is a banger of a tune and we can´t stop playing it. Luca Tarantini directed a video to accompany it. Here it is.

With less than a month to go until the release of Familiar Science, and after enticing us with the monumental first single ‘Take It to the Grave’, Jay Crocker aka JOYFULTALK has shared the album’s wild and brilliant lead single, ‘Ballad in 9’. The track features Nova Scotia-based Nicola Miller on alto sax and flute and Jay Crocker has paired the track with a video made by himself. Watch it below.

Nightports share second single from upcoming album with Tom Herbert

Nightports w/ Tom Herbert is the new collaborative album from inventive British duo Nightports with phenomenal bass player Tom Herbert, releasing on May 6th via The Leaf Label. Throughout Nightports w/ Tom Herbert, Herbert’s command of the double bass is on display. Speaking about the recording process, he says:

“Recording the music for the Nightports album was a very straightforward and enjoyable experience for me, I had nothing to prepare or learn and just spent a relaxed, if intensive, day of recording with Adam and Mark, who just let me improvise, occasionally throwing in a suggestion or idea for me to explore. They had the difficult job of sifting through the recordings and editing and shaping it into a coherent piece of work! I had very little memory of what I had played and I had no idea how extreme Adam and Mark were going to get with their production, so whenever they sent me anything it was always a surprise. I’m very proud of this music. It really feels like a great balance between and representation of my playing and their vision.”

The news emerged last month along with the first riveting single, ‘Arcs’ and now they are following it up with a second single called ‘October’ and an accompanying video by GOOD BOY. Watch it below.

ECHT! share cover of Sophie’s ‘MSMSMSM’; limited edition 7″ out in June

Belgian instrumental outfit ECHT! put out a hell of a debut album last year called Inwane, with influences aplenty, including hip-hop, footwork, trap, jazz and electronic music. Now they’re poised to follow it up with two covers from two producers they admire, Sophie and Objekt. The four-piece are offering up their own interpretation of ‘MSMSMSM’ by Sophie and ‘The Goose That Got Away’ by Objekt as a tribute to the club culture. “While being faithful to the atmosphere and the sounds of the two original tracks”, says the press release, “they add the organic energy that is typical of live music.”

MSMSMSM / The Goose That Got Away comes out as a limited edition 7″ on June 3rd through Sdban Records and can now be pre-ordered on bandcamp. Listen to ‘MSMSMSM’ below, you’ll be playing it again the second it ends.

Nancy Mounir announces debut album Nozhet El Nofous

A prominent name of Egypt’s independent music scene, Nancy Mounir is a talented and versatile multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and composer who plays various musical instruments including violin, piano, bass, theremin and the kawala, a traditional Egyptian bamboo flute. Following years of work researching female Egyptian singers from the early 20th century, she announced the release of her debut album Nozhet El Nofous, which means “Promenade of the Souls”. The upcoming record “explores microtonality, non-metered rhythms, and bold vulnerability through a musical dialogue between Mounir’s own arrangements and the sounds of archival recordings of once-famed singers”, explains the press release. “It explores the techniques and perspectives of a more freewheeling time period in Arabic music, before Arabic maqam (modal systems) and other musical foundations were standardized by the Middle East’s cultural power brokers in the early 1930s.”

Nozhet El Nofous will see the light of day on June 3rd through Simsara Music’s new imprint Simsara Records, and we can already hear the first otherworldly and entrancing single ‘Khafif Khafif’ featuring Saleh Abdel Hay.

Red Snapper to release new album Everybody Is Somebody in May

There’s a new album on the way from British mavericks Red Snapper. Entitled Everybody Is Somebody, the record was recorded over the past 3 years and arrives on May 6th through Lo Recordings. The 15-track album is described as “a glorious and heady take on the band’s pioneering alternative, trip hip and nu-jazz infused sound” and finds the outfit of Rich Thair (drums), Ali Friend (double bass) and David Ayers (guitar) and long term collaborator Tom Challenger (sax) “carry[ing] their signature and always-captivating sound into a new realm.”

Red Snapper have shared four singles from Everybody Is Somebody ahead of its release. Here’s ‘Tarzan’ and ‘Truth 1’ for an electrifying taster of what they’ll be throwing at us.

To celebrate the album release, Red Snapper are heading on a 12-date tour across the UK this spring, kicking off on May 4th at Bristol’s The Jam Jar. Check all their stops here.
