Happy Place’s debut album Northfield out this Friday
New York based Happy Place are an unusual quartet of two drums and two guitars, fronted by renowned percussionist and composer Will Mason, with Austin Vaughn also on drums and Andrew Smiley and Will Chapin on guitars. This Friday will see the release of their debut album, Northfield, written by Mason while experiencing sleep deprivation due to anxiety. The music on the album “is an exploration and celebration of the altered states of consciousness that asceticism elicits”, describes the press release. “It is about experiencing exultation through absence. It is about ecstasy through privation.”
Northfield is one of the most exciting albums we’ve heard in a long time. To get a taste of their instrumental virtuosity, listen to the two monumental album cuts Happy Place have previously shared, ‘Spoon!’ and ‘Rapture!’. The latter comes with a video directed by Chelsea Burcz.
Northfield is out on October 28th via Exit Stencil Records.

Rayon’s new album A Beat of Silence arrives next month
Markus Acher is no stranger to the spotlight, with bands like Notwist and Lali Puna under his belt. His catalogue includes many other projects, including founding his own label and composing film scores, and his solo project Rayon, initially created to release film soundtracks. Under this moniker, Acher is ready to release his new album A Beat of Silence. In the album, the spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves, and “treated with as much gravity”, describes press release.
A Beat of Silence will see the light of day on November 11th via Morr Music. Ahead of it, Rayon has shared the eerie and gentle title track. Take a listen now.
Blood Sport set for Moog Sound Lab residency, share video for ‘Reflective Orange’
Sheffield’s Blood Sport are currently touring the UK and Europe off the back of their latest album, Axe Laid To Root, released earlier this year. The tour includes a one-week residency at the Moog Sound Lab in Guilford in November, set to be recorded and released on Moog Recordings Library Label. The fruit of this residence, which will see them use a variety of Moog’s equipment including the recently reborn System 55, will be brought to life at Corsica Studios in London on December 1st in a performance alongside Chicago’s Hieroglyphic Being.
Prior to kicking off their tour, Blood Sport unveiled a video for ‘Reflective Orange’, lifted from Axe Laid to Root. The effort, filmed by Ed Crisp and Phoebe Plomerew, features several members of the Sheffield’s DIY music scene, and as the press releases puts it, “together, they form a sonic mega-structure performing a technoid sucker-punch”. Here it is.
Axe Laid to the Root is out now via Blast First Petite / Hybrid Vigour.
Efterklang/Fundal share new single ‘Stillborn’ from forthcoming opera album
Efterklang are back with Leaves – The Colour of Falling, a collaborative album with Karsten Fundal set for release next month. Initially an explorative opera commissioned by the Copenhagen Opera Festival, it was performed live last year in the 1000 m2 nuclear basement of the former Copenhagen Municipal Hospital.
Following the sublime ‘The Colour Not of Love’, Efterklang/Fundal are enticing us further with another single off Leaves – The Colour of Falling, the staggering and sombre ‘Stillborn’, featuring the glorious vocals of soprano Katinka Fogh Vindelev. Katinka, who had previously worked with both Efterklang and Fundal, described her involvement in the song:
“I sang “Stillborn” in the highest of platform heels while being 5-month pregnant with a 20 meter-long veil of shrinkwrap flapping behind me. It was in all ways a macabre moment and also my absolute highlight in the opera. My otherwise pretty restrained character wedged herself slowly through an audience captured in a narrow corridor bathed in cold blue lighting.”
‘Stillborn’ is being offered with an accompanying video, also featuring Katinka. Lend your eyes and ears to it now.
Leaves – The Colour of Falling is out on November 4th via Tambourhinoceros.
