The Unthanks - Mount The Air

Four years on from the release of Last, Northumberland based folk band The Unthanks have announce the release of a new full-length album. Mount The Air will see the light of day on February 9th via their own label RabbleRouser. Luckily, we don’t have to wait till then to get a taste of what they’ll be throwing at us. The enchanting title track is being released as a limited edition 10″ single on December 8th and an accompanying video has just emerged. As the press release describes, ‘Mount The Air’ “has echoes of Miles Davis and Gill Evans in their Sketches of Spain period, and climaxes with a euphoria reminiscent of Arcade Fire or Elbow, but without guitars, creating power instead with breathtaking musical colour and beauty.”.

Listen to a brand new Mwahaha track, ‘Wine Cooler’

Mwahaha

We’ve been eagerly waiting to hear new material from Oakland based outfit Mwahaha since their outstanding self-titled debut album came out. First self-released in 2011 and reissued last year through Plug Research, Mwahaha remains an absolute all-time favourite record well into this year.
They have been busy preparing its follow-up and finally we can rejoice, for they have just shared a colossal new instrumental track called ‘Wine Cooler’. A sonic wonderland, ‘Wine Cooler’ is gentle but powerful, dark but scintillating, delving into psychedelic krautrock territories full of melodic synth washes reminiscent of German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk. Drop what you’re doing and give it a listen now!

Bolywool’s new 7″ single, Fanø, arrives next week

Bolywool - Fanø

Hailing from Sweden, cousins Calle Thoor and Oskar Erlandsson formed Bolywool in 1998. With three albums under their belt, bringing together different constellations of musicians, Bolywool have a new album in the works. As it comes to fruition, they are teasing us with a new 7″ single, Fanø, slated for a November 19th release via Novoton.
‘Fanø’ is described as “another shiny manifestation of the band’s love of windy islands, the desolate and the timeless”, mirrorring their “melting pot of monotonous krautrock, British psychedelia, melancholy, post-rock and dreamy pop”. Fanø comes backed with a new cut, ‘Mynd’, and the digital release includes a remix of ‘Fanø’ by Simon Hildor.
Bolywool have unveiled a fittingly gorgeous video for ‘Fanø’, made by Daniel Josefsson. Watch it below.

Gala Drop return with second full-length album

Gala Drop - II

Portuguese psych experimentalist outfit Gala Drop are back with a new album, their first in over six years. The new effort, II, is set to be released on November 24th via Golf Channel Recordings.
Gala Drop recruited Detroit ex-pat Jerry The Cat (Parliament, Funkadelic, John Lee Hoker) as a guest collaborator. “It’s as a vocalist he makes his mark on II”, says the press release, adding that “his dub-smeared murmurs and galvanizing cries push[ing] Gala Drop even further away from the introspective, delay-pedal drone duo they started out as nearly a decade ago”.
Ahead of the album’s release, Gala Drop have dropped two cuts off it, the ‘Sun Gun’ and ‘You And I’, the latter being offered with a video by Pedro Maia. Listen to both tracks below.

Kaki King unveils video for ‘Tunnel’ off new rarities album

Kaki King - TunnelEarlier this week, Brooklyn based guitar virtuoso Kaki King released a collection of unreleased cuts spanning material from the last decade. Entitled Everybody Glows: B-Sides & Rarities, it features 15 tracks including B-sides, demos, covers and rarities, “culled from scratched demo CDs, long forgotten hard drives, and the fuzzier corners of her memory”, as the blurb explains. “The collection reveals the evolution of her songwriting while offering a glimpse of a young guitarist doing daring things on her instrument before she grasped the significance of any of it.”
Coinciding with the release, King has shared a fantastic video to accompany the outstanding and hypnotic ‘Tunnel’. The track has never been released before and it was recorded during King’s 2004 Legs To Make Us Longer sessions. Here it is.

Everybody Glows: B-Sides & Rarities can be ordered on bandcamp.
