We’re only a few days away from the release of Kaki King‘s new album, The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body. As we had previously mentioned, the album comes paired with a high-tech projection mapping show, which King has been performing throughout North America.
The guitar virtuoso had already teased the album with a live video of her performing ‘Battle is a Learning’. Now she’s offering another taste from The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body, in the form of a stunning and kaleidoscopic video for the song ‘Anthropomorph’. The video was conceived collaboratively with visual artist Shantell Martin, with both artists inspiring each other. “Music really helps give my lines and words life, and brings a natural spring to them,” said Martin. “Listening and creating live to Kaki’s piece was almost like meditating: becoming lost in the song; so full and present.” Similarly, King describes Shantell improvising to a solo guitar demo of the track. “But when I saw what she had created, I heard percussion, horns, finger snapping, and organs. So I added those instruments to the final audio track. It was a beautiful back and forth.”
Watch the video for ‘Anthropomorph’ below and watch out for the release of The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body this Tuesday March 3th via Short Stuff Records.

Kaki King announces new album and multimedia performances

Kaki King - Battle Is a Learning

Following the release of Everybody Glows: B-Sides & Rarities last year, Kaki King has announced details of a new album, due out in just over a month. The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body drops on March 3th via Short Stuff Records and it comes paired with a high-tech projection mapping show, that sees King touring North America from today until May. The multimedia show produced in collaboration with Glowing Pictures, who have previously worked with Animal Collective, David Byrne & Brian Eno, Beastie Boys, and TV On The Radio, amongst others.

“Although it’s a soundtrack to the multimedia show, I want the album to stand on it’s own as a collection of instrumental music,” said Kaki. “The album is an amalgam of the many different ways I’ve approached the instrument over the years. Some of it’s rough, some of it’s sad and beautiful, and some of it could be remixed for the dance floor. More than anything the process of creating this music has proven to me once again that the guitar really does the speaking, and I’m just the interpreter.”

To give us a taster, King has shared a live video of her performing ‘Battle is a Learning’. Here it is.

Kaki King unveils video for ‘Tunnel’ off new rarities album

Kaki King - TunnelEarlier this week, Brooklyn based guitar virtuoso Kaki King released a collection of unreleased cuts spanning material from the last decade. Entitled Everybody Glows: B-Sides & Rarities, it features 15 tracks including B-sides, demos, covers and rarities, “culled from scratched demo CDs, long forgotten hard drives, and the fuzzier corners of her memory”, as the blurb explains. “The collection reveals the evolution of her songwriting while offering a glimpse of a young guitarist doing daring things on her instrument before she grasped the significance of any of it.”
Coinciding with the release, King has shared a fantastic video to accompany the outstanding and hypnotic ‘Tunnel’. The track has never been released before and it was recorded during King’s 2004 Legs To Make Us Longer sessions. Here it is.

Everybody Glows: B-Sides & Rarities can be ordered on bandcamp.

Kaki King announces new instrumental album

Brooklyn based guitar virtuoso Kaki King has announced the release of her sixth studio album. Glow, produced by D. James Goodwin, follows her widely acclaimed 2010’s Junior.

All instrumental and marking an artistic reboot for herself, Glow is a guitar record as King described. “This is the sound of a person playing guitar. Whatever additions we made, the fundamental of this record is still one person playing a guitar. That’s who I am.”
King added that Glow is “full of beautiful guitar songs accompanied by string quartet, bagpipes, low pillowy bass drum thuds, shakers galore, and a library of unique soundscapes that were created in the studio for each piece.”

The album is due out on October 9th via Velour Recordings and will be followed by a North American tour.

Whilst we wait for King to drop a cut from the upcoming album, check out a video from one of her performances last month, where she played ‘Bowen Island’, a new song off Glow.
