In the works for a long time, In These Times, the eighth album from celebrated and prolific percussionist, composer and producer Makaya McCraven will see the light of day in September. Envisioned by McCraven since after the release of his 2015 debut record In The Moment, In These Times is a dream of an album come true. Featuring a 11 song suite, the album is described as “a highly personal but broadly communicable fusion of odd-meter original compositions from his working songbook with orchestral, large ensemble arrangements and the edit-heavy “organic beat music””.
McCraven assembled an incredible cast of musicians and creative partners to bring this album to life, including Jeff Parker, Junius Paul, Brandee Younger, Joel Ross, and Marquis Hill.
Following ‘Seventh String’, the Chicago based beat scientist released a second spellbinding single called ‘Dream Another’. The track is offered with an accompanying music visualizer directed and animated by Nik Arthur. Watch it below and listen to the previous single straight after.
Based out of Antwerp, Lucid Lucia have been at the forefront of the Belgian jazz scene since 2008. Formerly known as BRZZVLL, the outfit reemerged with a new name and a new line up now comprising founding member and saxophonist Vincent Brijs, Bart Borremans on sax, Stijn Cools on drums, Dries Laheye on bass, Dries Verhulst on guitar, Jan Willems on keys and James Williams on drums and percussion.
This October will see Lucid Lucia release their debut album, Ever-changing Light, an effort channelling various influences and taking inspiration from the sound of Herbie’s ‘Head Hunters’ and Miles’ acid funk of the mid-70s to create their own “jazz and space funk-infused grooves”. The album “is a mind-expanding celebration centred on freedom and rhythm”, as the press release describes. “Free-spirited saxes, futuristic-sounding keys, monstrous bass lines and shifting drum beats unite, resulting in an uplifting and joyous celebration of jazz, funk and groove.”
For a taste of what’s on offer ahead of the album’s release, Lucid Lucia have let loose their new single ‘Pigeons’. Take a listen now.
Ever-changing Light is out on October 7th through Sdban Ultra
Acclaimed and genre-bending cellist and composer Lori Goldston has been around the block for over 25 years, with stints in renown projects, including David Byrne, Earth, Nirvana, Mirah, R. Ring, Laura Viers, and The Wedding Present, as well as score work for operas, films, theatre, and dance productions. This October will see the release of High and Low, her new solo album. Encompassing two sections, the “High” section is a series of solo improvised memorials for Goldston’s friend and Canadian artist and musician Geneviève Elverum, and the other section features improvised duo performances with drummer Dan Sasaki.
High and Low is set for release on October 7th via SofaBurn and ahead of it Goldston has shared the first riveting single ‘The Waves and What’s Under’. The track comes with an accompanying video directed by Clyde Petersen, who comments:
“Lori Goldston and I convened on a secret island in the Salish Sea to create the music video. The Boatel, a private guest house for visitors, was constructed out of an old wooden boat, cut into pieces and hauled onto the shore to be reassembled in the forest. It is surrounded by Alder and Cedar trees, baby fawns, chipmunks and birds of all varieties who spend their days in the blackberry brambles, carving out nests and spots of shade to rest in while eating the tender leaves each spring brings.”
