Last year the enchantingly talented composer and violinist Sarah Neufeld released her outstanding debut album Hero Brother. Now a special Bonus Edition of the album is being offered and it comes with a new 3-track EP entitled Black Ground. Sarah explained how these tracks came about:
“The Black Ground EP is comprised of 2 pieces from the body of work that created Hero Brother and an orchestral version of “Breathing Black Ground”. “Requiem For Douglas” began as a piece I wrote in collaboration with video artist Jason Last called Scalpel/Stradivarius. When my uncle passed away, the piece evolved into something for him. “Muscle Til Death” is the last piece I wrote before recording Hero Brother. It is very much a part of that world, but ultimately stands alone. The orchestral version of “Breathing Black Ground” came as an invitation from Owen Pallett to join an orchestral session in Prague. It was really exciting to shift the piece into the world of string orchestra, and such a treat to collaborate with Owen.”
Coinciding with the EP release, Sarah has unveiled a video diptych for the track ‘Breaking Black Ground’. The video was made by Montreal visual artist Brad Todd, who was also behind the video diptych that accompanied a track from label mate Saltland. Watch it beneath.
Hero Brother is out now via Constellation.
