A central figure in the UK jazz scene, Jack Wyllie is best known as a co-founding member of Portico Quartet and a member of Szun Waves. Wyllie has also explored new territory in recent years through Paradise Cinema, the project he launched in 2020 with a debut album followed by a second one in 2024. Now, the the multi-instrumentalist and composer is stepping into the spotlight with the announcement of his first album under his own name. Entitled Eternal Spring, the album arrives on September 11th through Gondwana Records, and marks a significant new chapter for a musician whose work has consistently pushed beyond the boundaries of jazz. Eternal Spring draws inspiration from both Wyllie’s love of nature and the idea of an enduring sense of hope, and it finds him exploring a wide musical landscape, bringing together elements of jazz, ambient music, contemporary classical and post-rock. Joining Wyllie on the record are fellow Portico Quartet members Duncan Bellamy on drums and Milo Fitzpatrick on bass, alongside pianist and composer Hania Rani, cellist Dobrawa Czocher and Australian mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean.
Ahead of the album’s release, Wyllie has shared the ravishing and resplendent title track, which serves as a very exciting taste of what’s coming. Speaking about the track, Wyllie says:
“I tried to capture that feeling at the start of this piece, with a layered string quartet playing harmonics and arpeggios, hovering rather than settling. Underneath it all are these Riley-esque synth lines, really quite simple, but always turning. I feel like the whole tune sounds as if the album is slowly waking up.”
‘Eternal Spring’ comes paired with a live video directed and produced by Francesco Martinuzzi. Watch it below.
