Watch the video for Arandel’s new single ‘L’Heure du Loup’; new album Cosmogonies du Silence out in January

French composer and producer Arandel has announced the release of his sixth album, Cosmogonies du Silence. The new record follows the two volumes of InBach, released in 2020 and 2021, in which he reworked the music of J.S. Bach using historical instruments from the Musée de la Musique in Paris. Six years later, he returns to his own compositions with a new album drawing on a decade of work, memory, absence, and mourning. Across ten pieces, Baroque motifs surface among spectral choirs, analogue electronics, and beats drawing on drill, R&B, chiptune, and lo-fi house. Arandel also takes inspiration from the experimental sound work of BBC Radiophonic Workshop pioneers Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, and John Baker, using manipulated recordings, altered voices, and fragments of melody to explore sound as a way of preserving traces of what has disappeared. To bring Cosmogonies du Silence to life, Arandel has also enlisted the help of Louis Delorme (Air, Sébastien Tellier), Ben Shemie (Suuns), Meryem Aboulouafa, Douglas Dare, and Félix Maritaud.

We’ll have to wait until January 22nd for the album to be out through InFiné, but we can already get a tantalizing taste of what’s coming with the first single, ‘L’Heure du Loup’. Named after the darkest hours before dawn, the track moved between sleep and waking, day and night, and this duality is reflected in the 2D animated video that accompanies it. Marina Dard directs.
