We’re excited to know KAU have new music on the way, following their debut full-length album, The Cycle Repeats, which was one of our Album Picks of 2023. The electrifying Brussels trio of Andre Breidlid (drums), Matteo Genovese (bass) and Jan Janzen (keys) are set to release a limited double A-side 7-inch vinyl in September. Drawing from elements of jazztronica and acts like Yussef Dayes, corto.alto or Flying Lotus, KAU blend British jazz with the vibrant ‘Brussels sound’ to create something diverse and deeply grooving, capturing the visceral energy of their live shows.

Set to drop on September 13th through Sdban Ultra, the double single features ‘Kaugummi’ and ‘Mad Kau’. ‘Kaugummi’, which means chewing gum, marries a dub-influenced bassline with brisk drum rhythms, creating a track that’s both hypnotic and invigorating. ‘Kaugummi’ is also KAU’s most recent original track and you can listen to it below.

‘Amulet’ is the latest fiery single previewing KAU‘s forthcoming The Cycle Repeats album, following the utterly brilliant and intoxicating, ‘Little Steps’. A heady brew of propulsive breakbeats and hypnotic melodic ideas with an undeniable groove throughout, ‘Amulet’ showcases an adventurous band at full tilt. Back in April, KAU‘s two EPS, 2021’s II and 2022’s III, received a vinyl treatment through Sdban Records as a Record Store Day release. The Brussels trio of Andre Breidlid (drums), Matteo Genovese (bass) and Jan Janzen (keys) had then also hinted at new material for this Autumn and news of a debut album has now been revealed. Entitled The Cycle Repeats, the record arrives on September 22nd and KAU are teasing it with the first single, ‘Little Steps’. The track is a “a showcase of their ability to roam through different genres and moods in relative ease and finesse”, as the label describes, ” tak[ing] the listener through a trip of constant build-ups and rests of energy, at times danceable and at times hypnotical.”

Utterly brilliant and intoxicating, ‘Little Steps’ will have you dancing along in seconds.

Record Store Day took place last Saturday and two of KAU‘s EPs were included among the special releases out that day. The latest signing on the ever–consistent Sdban Records, KAU’s two EPS, 2021’s II and 2022’s III, received a well deserved vinyl treatment, also marking the trio’s first vinyl release. On both EPs, Andre Breidlid (drums), Matteo Genovese (bass) and Jan Janzen (keys), who make up the Brussels outfit, stretch beyond the jazz cosmos, creating wild and exhilarating compositions with an improvisation spirit and irresistible grooves. KAU, as the label puts it, “create a head-bobbing atmosphere using broken beats and catchy melodies while leaving space for improvisation”.
