Àbáse, the project of strikingly talented Berlin-based Hungarian producer, composer, improviser and keyboardist Szabolcs Bognár, instantly got us under his spell with Awakening, his magnificent second album, which made it to our Album Picks of 2024. Drawing from a diverse musical background, including collaborations with artists like Wayne Snow, Dele Sosimi and Pat Thomas, and also his own projects like Mabon Dawud Republic and Soulclap Budapest amongst many others, Àbáse explores the intersection of jazz, Afrobeat, Yoruba rhythms, hip-hop and electronic music. Taking his name from a Yoruba word for collaboration, his music exudes a palpable sense of joyful unity and is jam-packed with infectious grooves.
