Mixtape #181

We’ve had a soft spot for St. Barbe ever since they landed on our radar. The London trio of James Maltby, Edwin Ireland and Floyer Sydenham have been steadily carving out their own lane in the UK’s jazz scene since 2021, honing a sound that threads together contemporary jazz, punk, math rock, hip-hop, electronica, and a wide range of other influences. Their self-produced debut EP Shapeless introduced a band unafraid of complexity, and with the recent Shoal EP, released last February, they continue to refine a sound that feels both meticulously constructed and alive in the moment, pairing technical ability with genre flexibility. We’re beyond excited to have St. Barbe at the helm of this month’s mixtape, with a selection of tracks exploring the myriad influences that help shape their own music. Press play and enjoy.

Listen to St. Barbe’s new single ‘Dorothy’

Since forming in 2021, St. Barbe have been carving their own lane in the UK’s jazz scene. Drawing from jazz, punk, math rock, hip-hop, electronica, and a wide range of other influences, the London trio have built a reputation on technical sharpness and genre flexibility. Back in November, they announced the release of a new EP, Shoal, and introduced it then with the raucous, effervescent and infectious single ‘Pinch’ featuring corto.alto.
Ahead of the EP’s release on February 18th through Bridge the Gap, St. Barbe have today unveiled a new track called ‘Dorothy’. More nuanced and more introspective, ‘Dorothy’ is a graceful ballad that leans into melody and space, offering a compelling glimpse into the breadth of their upcoming EP. Guitarist James Maltby comments:

“The challenge of this band has always been reconciling the elements of jazz we love with our influences from the math/post-rock and metal worlds that feels organic and cohesive. Shoal feels like the closest we’ve come to this. It’s been a long time coming so we’re excited for it to be released into the wild.”

St. Barbe announce Shoal EP; share new single ‘Pinch’ (feat. corto.alto)

If, like us, you haven’t heard of St. Barbe yet, now is the perfect time to get acquainted. Hailing from London, St. Barbe first came together in 2021, and since then, they’ve been making waves with their genre-bending approach to contemporary jazz. The trio draws from a wide array of influences, from jazz and punk to math rock, hip-hop, and electronica, and the result is something that feels fresh and exciting.

St. Barbe have announced the release of a new EP, Shoal, set to arrive on February 18th through Bridge the Gap. A self-produced effort, the forthcoming EP reflects the band’s evolution and as the press release describes, it “showcases a considered approach, balancing rhythmic complexity with melodic intent”.

Alongside the EP announcement, St. Barbe have just dropped ‘Pinch’, a raucous, effervescent and infectious track featuring Glaswegian prodigious multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer corto.alto. Take a listen below.
