Mixtape #162

August is upon us and what better way to set the mood than with our monthly mixtape, this time round curated by Swiss trio Meril Wubslin. Based between Lausanne and Brussels, they were founded in 2010 by Christian Garcia-Gaucher and Valérie Niederoest and also comprise David Costenaro on drums. Earlier this year they released their fourth album, Faire Ça, a bold, exhilarating and fascinating record that sees them continue to evolve and explore new sonic elements and territories. The trio added a new dimension to the album recording it with outsider Kwake Bass at his London studio. We are stoked to unveil their mix and open a window into the myriad influences at play in their music. Press play already!

Massive Attack drop Ritual Spirit EP and premiere new video

Massive Attack

Good news for fans of trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack, who released a new EP, Ritual Spirit, last Friday. Featuring four tracks, the EP was written and produced by Massive Attack’s Robert del Naja and long-term studio collaborator Euan Dickinson and it marks their first new material since 2011’s Heligoland. Ritual Spirit also marks the return of friend and collaborator Tricky who features on the EP, as does Roots Manuva and Young Fathers.
Ritual Spirit precedes another EP written and co-produced by Daddy G, due in the Spring, and a full-length album set to be released later in the year.
Coinciding with EP release, Massive Attack have unveiled a video for ‘Take It There’ featuring Tricky. Hiro Murai directs.

Massive Attack’s Ritual Spirit EP is out now via Virgin/EMI.

Tricky unveils new project Skilled Mechanics, announces debut album

Skilled Mechanics: DJ Milo, Tricky & Luke HarrisSince relocating to Berlin earlier this year, trip-hop pioneer Tricky has been busy with a new project called Skilled Mechanics. It sees him working with a different cast of contributors from project to project, and on the first one, Tricky joined forces with longtime friend and collaborator DJ Milo and his tour drummer Luke Harris. The fruit of this collaboration arrives early next year in the form of a self-titled full-length album.
The album also features guest contributions from Chinese rapper Ivy 艾菲, London based singer Renata Platon, Danish singer songwriter Oh Land, and his current vocalist Francesca Belmonte.

‘Diving Away’, a cover  of ‘Porpoise Head’ by Porno For Pyros, is the first single taken from the album. Here’s what Tricky said about it:

“I toured with them in Australia in 1996. My daughter Mazy, who was about four years of age, was with us and she had frontman Perry Farrell wrapped round her little finger. He took all of us to Sealand in Australia. So there was me and Porno For Pyros all trying to get her pram onto the Australian metro. But how many big artists would do something beautiful like that? I think it speaks volumes about him. So I’ve got a lot of love for Perry Farrell and I’ve always wanted to cover one of his songs.”

Now listen to ‘Diving Away’.

Skilled Mechanics is out on January 22nd via Tricky’s own label False Idols.

Tricky offers new cut from upcoming album

Tricky

Earlier this year, Tricky announced the release of his 10th studio album entitled False Idols. The album arrives on May 27th via Tricky’s new imprint, which also has the same name as the album, and it’s being released in association with !K7 Records.
False Idols features vocal contributions from Nneka, The Antlers’ Peter Silberman and Fifi Rong.

Calling the album “a stunning return to form”, Tricky said it brought him back to his natural instincts. “I was lost for ages. I was trying to prove something to people, trying to do something to please other people and also myself at the same time, which is never going to work. To be honest with you, I’ve been floating around since Chris Blackwell and Island. My last two albums, I thought they were good, but I realise now they weren’t. This album is about me finding myself again.”

Tricky is offering a new cut from the album, ‘Tribal Drums’, as a free download. The track features vocals from Francesca Belmonte and Tristan Cassell. Stream it below.
