Mixtape #176

An ingenious multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and composer, James Weir has long been a creative force in Chicago’s music scene, first with the post punk band NE HI and later with the synth driven Spun Out. With Blue Earth Sound, he has taken a bold turn into jazz inflected, cinematic territory, crafting music that’s reflective, expansive, and full of unexpected depth. Weir’s transformation from rock bass player to jazz bandleader came out of a period of soul-searching, inspired by his diverse influences, from Japanese fusion to the soul-jazz classics of his adopted city. With Cicero Nights, his debut album released last month, Weir’s vision fully comes to life, embracing both the organic chemistry of his collaborators and his love for improvisation and expressive instrumentation. So we’re thrilled to kick off October with a very special selection of tracks handpicked and mixed by Weir, offering a glimpse into some of the influences at play in his own sonic world. Press play and enjoy!

Mixtape #163

A restless and forward-thinking artist, with the technical ability and versatility to back it up, Ben Lumsdaine is a force to be reckoned with. The LA-based composer, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and producer has a long list of credits as a live performer and studio musician on numerous recordings. As a producer/engineer/mixer he has shaped records for a cavalcade of artists including International Anthem labelmates Daniel Villarreal, Jeremiah Chiu, Anna Butters and Bex Burch, and many others. Last year he released his debut solo record, Murmuration Without End, a mesmerizing and magnificent collection of rhythmic compositions that saw him step out of his comfort zone and swap his primary instrument for modular synthesizers to create a record unlike anything he's ever done before. Worthy of repeated listens, we still haven’t been able put it down. So we’re ecstatic to share the superb mix he put together for us, featuring, as he puts it, “a pretty wide ranging selection of tunes that have impacted me in some lasting way over the last decade or so”. Orions Belte are a real treat. Playful, breezy and driving in equal measures, their music is fun as hell and instantly stood out to us. Earlier this year, the Norwegian trio of Øyvind Blomstrøm, Chris Holm and Kim Åge Furuhaug released their second album, Villa Amorini, an impeccable eleven track LP that feels fresh and infectious, drawing influences from disparate genres, with groove elements lurking beneath it all. We're thrilled to unveil the superb mixtape they put together for us, mirroring their array of influences. Not bound to a specific genre, their mix is a gift that keeps on giving.
