Machinefabriek set to release new album in January; shares collaborative track with Peter Broderick

Machinefabriek, the project of Dutch composer Rutger Zuydervelt, has a new album arriving in the new year called With Voices. A prolific musician, recording and performing with a multitude of other performers for nearly two decades, Zuydervelt’s upcoming record also sees him collaborating with a slew of artists, including Richard Youngs, Peter Broderick, Marissa Nadler, Chantal Acda and Terence Hannum (of Locrian) amongst others.
“True to the album’s name”, describes the press release, “the eight pieces demonstrate Zuydervelt’s user of cassette recorders, tone generators, radios, synths, and other hifi curio to construct aural architecture around the singular vocal work from the album’s guests”.

On With Voices, “there is an alchemical, metallurgical quality that arises from Zuydervelt’s unique way of merging humanness with abstraction, harshness with beauty, and unintelligibility with familiarity”.

All the tracks on the album are titled with Roman numerals, and Machinefabriek has shared ‘III’, a collaboration with Peter Broderick, as the first enticing taste. Give it a listen now and grab the album when it drops on January 18th through Western Vinyl.

Mixtape #81

We're honoured to have this month's mixtape curated by one of our long-time favourite bands, Efterklang. The Berlin-based Danish trio of childhood friends Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg have a knack at keeping us enthralled with their brilliantly orchestrated compositions that transcend genres. They constantly venture in new and exciting directions, as shows their latest release, the collaborative opera album Leaves – The Colour of Falling, which was one of our Album Picks of 2016. So be prepared to discover some surprises as you dig in the trove of tracks they picked for us!

First taste from Philip Glass remix project by Tyondai Braxton

Philip Glass, one of the world’s most celebrated composers, turns 75 this year and to commemorate it, the most impressive group of talented musicians contributed to Rework: Philip Glass Remixed, a collection of Glass’s original compositions that have been reworked and remixed.

According to the press release, the idea first come about after conversations between Glass and Beck, who then “recruited producer Hector Castillo (David Bowie, Björk, Lou Reed) to help assemble a collection of remixes of Glass’ works by a list of critically acclaimed artists.”
Other than Beck, Rework: Philip Glass Remixed features remixes from Tyondai Braxton, Cornelius, Dan Deacon, Amon Tobin, Peter Broderick and more.

The album will be available as a double LP and double CD and is slated for a October 23rd release via Orange Mountain Music / Ernest Jenning Record Co. and The Kora Records. You can pre-order it now.

We have just been graced with the first cut from the forthcoming album, a remix of ‘Rubric’, which comes from the hands of prodigious composer and musician Tyondai Braxton. It is amazing beyond belief and you’ll be hitting play again the second it ends. Here it is.
