Daniel O’Sullivan shares first single ‘Silhouette’ from upcoming new album Folly

London based multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan has announced the release of his second album under his own name, following 2017’s VELD. Entitled Folly, the new record was mostly written in London and arrives on April 5th through O Genesis Recordings. Composed around the time of his son’s birth and the passing of his friend Ian Johnstone, Folly embodies feelings of both joy and suffering. “Joy is inseparable from suffering and sometimes those polarities arrive at the same moment”, explained O’Sullivan. “Music offers a vessel to contain the unspeakable.”
Speaking about the writing process behind the record, O’Sullivan has this to say:

“Writing songs alone can take some time even if a song arrives fully formed in your mind. The execution of it involves long durations with each individual part of the arrangement until it reaches something concise. The song tells you what it needs and I try not to force ideas onto it. These songs are outside in rather than inside out, there was always a latency between the birth of the song and my understanding of its purpose. Folly is looking at who is doing the shaping, most of these songs are about writing songs.”

Ahead of the album’s release, we can already hear the first marvellous single ‘Silhouette’.

In other related news, and coinciding with the release of Folly, Daniel O’Sullivan has a special two-night residency in store for us at Sutton House in Hackney on April 5th and 6th, where he will perform songs from Folly with his ensemble and both nights will features stellar guests appearances from the likes of Richard Youngs, The Silver Field, Peter Broderick and Thighpaulsandra among others.

Naytronix shares new single ‘Human’, third album incoming

Oakland based multi-instrumentalist and producer Nate Brenner is a very talented and busy man, with his membership in Tune-Yards and other projects. Under his Naytronix moniker, Brenner released two albums, 2012’s Dirty Glow and 2015’s Mister Divine. Both brilliant, both made it our Picks of the Year, so news of a new album is very welcome and highly anticipated.
Naytronix’s third LP is called Air and will see release through Kieku Records. While mainly a solo endeavour, Air does feature a few special collaborative guests such as Mwahaha´s Ross Peacock, Tune-Yards’ Merrill Garbus, songwriter Madeline Kenney, percussionist Hamir Atwal and guitarist Mark Allen-Piccolo.

Alongside the album announcement, Naytronix has shared the first advance single, ‘Human’, which he describes as “a groovy psyche pop song that leaps between a menacing bass riff and a lush Technicolor piano section”. Take a listen now.

Fold return with new album and share first single ‘Stronger Than the Evils’ (feat. Motormouf)

After a four-year wait, there’s good news from Fold who are back with a new album. The Leeds based quartet released an EP, Written In The Sky, back in 2017 but their eponymous debut album, which was one of our Picks of the Year, came out in 2015. The follow-up will drop on April 13th coinciding with Record Store Day and preceding the album’s release, Fold have shared the first single ‘Stronger Than the Evils’, a brilliant and powerful collaborative track with Nottingham based MC / beatboxing champion MotorMouF. Fold have always had a socially-conscious message and they continue to take a stand on some of the political and social issues the world faces today. Take a listen now.

Listen to Gum Takes Tooth´s latest single ‘Fights Physiology’ off new album Arrow

Arrow, the third album from Gum Takes Tooth, came out last week and coinciding with it, the London duo shared an electronic beast called ‘Fights Physiology’. This is their first all-electronic track but “it retains the live ethic that the band have championed since their inception”, as the press release describes.  The track comes with an accompanying video and you can watch it below. Anyone with photosensitive epilepsy should skip the visuals and just listen to it loud.

Debut album from Immix Ensemble’s Daniel Thorne on the way

Australian-born, Liverpool-based composer and saxophonist Daniel Thorne has been part of Erased Tapes for a while, releasing under his project Immix Ensemble. March 15th will see him release his debut album, Lines Of Sight, under his own name. Thorne had this to say about the record:

“Thematically, this music was inspired by birds-eye aerial images and the idea of perspective – how something incredibly complex like a river or the surface of the ocean is reduced to a simple line or shape when viewed from the heavens. The line between natural and man-made becomes increasingly blurred.

I’ve long been a fan of studio-based composition, but have always found the infinite possibilities on offer daunting and, often, a stumbling block. To get around this I set myself a challenge of limiting myself to the physical instruments in my possession – a few different saxophones and a bass synth, with no more than four tracks to record them.”

Anton Eger’s debut album Æ out next month

Extraordinary Norwegian/Swedish drummer Anton Eger is no stranger in the jazz world. Best known as a third of Phronesis, Eger has also spent the last decade playing and collaborating with artists like Django Bates, Marius Neset, Daniel Heløy Davidsen and Ivo Neame.

Eger has announced the first album release under his own name, fittingly titled after his own initials, Æ. The album arrives on February 8th through Edition Records and saw him enlist an all-star lineup of musicians, including Matt Calvert, Dan Nicholls, Robin Mullarkey, and many more.

To get us excited, we can already stream two phenomenal tracks off it, ‘Sugaruzd +​+​+ pT’ and ‘HERb +++ gA’, the latter with an accompanying video directed by Troelz Schmidt.
