Grönland announces Holger Czukay five-disc retrospective box set Cinema
There’s a wonderful treat on the way to celebrate the music of Holger Czukay, bassist and co-founder of legendary krautrock band Can, who passed away last September. On March 23rd, the day before what would have been Czukay’s 80th birthday, Grönland will release Cinema, a 5 Vinyl/CD retrospective box set. Spanning over 5 decades, Cinema compiles much of his solo work, collaborations with artists like Brian Eno, Jah Wobble and Karlheinz Stockhausen and also previously unreleased music. The release also comes with a photo booklet, a photo booklet and a DVD of musical slapstick comedy and poetic film ‘Krieg der Töne’ (‘War of the Sounds’) which stars Czukay as himself.
What’s more, the vinyl boxset will include a 7″ vinyl video, an innovative system that allows video footage to be stored on vinyl, featuring the bonkers and magnificent video for Holger ‘Cool In The Pool’ off his 1979 album Movies. Watch it now.
Suuns set to release fourth album, Felt, in March
Suuns have announced the follow-up to Hold/Still, which was one of our 15 Picks of 2016. Entitled Felt, the quartet’s new album arrives on March 2nd through Secretly Canadian and just like their previous record, it was produced by John Congleton. More playful and brighter, Felt “is not as clinical”, said singer/guitarist Ben Shemie. “There’s more swagger”.
The vibrant album cover seems to mirror the fresh vividness in the band’s sounds. Shemie explains:
“I was at a barbecue last summer and there were balloons everywhere. I love this idea of compression, like something might pop. So, I had this image of a hand touching a balloon, a bubble gummy kind of vibe. But the challenge was how to depict that in an interesting way. If it’s a real hand it’s too sexual; there’s too much symbolism. So, we made plaster casts of our hands, like statues, and chose the best one. Joseph came up with the color scheme, the sickly green background, and shot the whole cover in an hour.”
Ahead of Felt‘s release, Suuns are teasing it with ‘Watch You, Watch Me’, and it comes with an accompanying video directed by Ruff Mercy.

With less than a month to go until the release of Pissing Stars, and having already enticed us with ‘LxOxVx / Shelter In Place’, Efrim Manuel Menuck is teasing the album again with a riveting new track, ‘A Lamb In The Land Of Payday Loans’. Described as “a charged rallying cry shaped by hope, mistrust, and resistance”, the track “combines Menuck’s trademark celebratory desperation with undeniably catchy elements”. To celebrate the album’s release, Efrim Manuel Menuck is playing a handful of dates across Canada this February. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for a European tour to follow soon.
Cavern Of Anti-Matter announce new album Hormone Lemonade and share first single
We have raved at length about Cavern of Anti-Matter, whose second album void beats / invocation trex was one of our Picks of 2016 and remains a favourite. So we’re thrilled to know the Berlin based trio headed by Stereolab’s co-founder Tim Gane, and also comprising former Stereolab drummer Joe Dillworth and synth master Holger Zapf are gearing up to release its follow-up, Hormone Lemonade. With the sounds of modular synths and home-built drum machines heavily used on the new record, Holger’s self-constructed rhythm machines, the Taktron Z3 and Taktron Z2, recorded to tape over three one-hour sessions, were the “album’s genesis”, as the press release describes.
Hormone Lemonade arrives on March 23rd through Duophonic and we can already hear the explosive and trance-inducing first single ‘Make Out Fade Out’. Play it loud.
Ryuichi Sakamoto shares Cornelius remix of ‘ZURE’ from upcoming album Async Remodels
Ryuichi Sakamoto is ready to unveil a companion to last year’s async, his first solo album in eight years. Entitled Async Remodels, the upcoming record saw Sakamoto enlist the help of several stellar artists including Alva Noto, Oneohtrix Point Never, Fennesz and Jóhann Jóhannsson to rework and reinterpret his original compositions. Following Yves Tumor Obsession Edit of ‘ZURE’, a Cornelius remix of the same track, also featured on Async Remodels, is now streaming. Listen to both versions below.
