Mixtape #103

Born in the heart of the Basque Country, Elena Sétien's music has led her to London and Copenhagen for the last two decades. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with an independent spirit, Elena's melodies are immediately captivating. Her songs shimmer with simplicity and beauty, enhanced by her rich and deep voice telling stories of everyday life and nature. Now back in her native San Sebastian, she released last month her gorgeous new album Another Kind Of Revolution. Our first mixtape of the year is here and it is amazing, put together by Toronto based composer and multi-instrumentalist Joseph Shabason. Known for his longtime collaboration with Destroyer and DIANA, he is also a busy recording artist and touring musician. Marrying jazz and ambient, Shabason first enticed us with his debut album Aytche, which he followed up last year with Anne, a beguiling and affecting album that made it to our Album Picks of 2018. So we're over the moon he found the time to pick this marvellous mix of tracks for us!

Mixtape #95

We shimmy our way into May with a mixtape put together by Vula Viel's beating heart, Bex Burch. Now a trio, they blend Ghanaian musical traditions with electronica, jazz and myriad other elements to make intoxicatingly joyous and entrancingly rhythmic tracks. Here's what she had to say about her mix:

"Most of the music which has inspired me is unrecorded, it was played and seeped into me through my skin in real life, physical, tactile contact, along with the smells and feels and peoples and life. My recorded influences are pretty limited and still very much from many years ago, although I'm listening to music again now as I'm back to 'school' in writing. I definitely don't know what's "cool" but here's some songs which move me. Currently on my record player is Oté Maloya - The Birth of electric Maloya on Réunion Island."

  1. Caméléon – La Rosée Si Feuilles Songes [Diffusion Royale]
  2. Oren Marshall & The Charming Transport Band – Just Get Over It [F-IRE]
  3.  Led Zeppelin – Good Times Bad Times [Atlantic]
  4.  Nirvana – Where Did You Sleep Last Night [Matl CRash / Octopus]
  5.  Joni Mitchell – A Case Of You [Reprise]
  6.  Brian Finnegan – Marga’s [Singing Tree Music ]
  7. Steve Reich – Reich: Sextet – Mvt. #3 [Nonesuch]
  8. Steve Reich – Reich: Sextet – Mvt. #4 [Nonesuch]

Mixtape #52

We've said it before and we'll say it again: we are huge fans of John Colpitts aka Kid Millions, the genius Brooklyn based multi-instrumentalist and composer behind drum ensemble Man Forever. Over the years, he has lent his drumming talents to a plethora of inspired and diverse projects. So we're ecstatic to present this month's mixtape featuring over an hour of music selected by Kid Millions himself. Without further ado, drum roll... Play!
