Tortoise’s new album, The Catastrophist, arrives next month

Tortoise - The CatastrophistChicago’s legendary quintet Tortoise have a new album on the way, following 2009’s Beacons of Ancestorship. Entitled The Catastrophist, the album’s first came to life in 2010, when the City of Chicago commissioned the group “to compose a suite of music rooted in its ties to the area’s noted jazz and improvised music communities”.  The band’s Jeff Parker explained that they reworked and restructured all of the songs quite heavily.  “We actually had quite a lot of material that we ended up giving up on. Oftentimes, we’ll shelve ideas and come back to them years later.”

‘Gesceap’ serves as the album’s first taste ahead of its release on January 22nd via Thrill Jockey. Here it is.

Mixtape #51

June is upon us, and with a new month comes a very special batch of tunes picked by one of our favourite bands, Piano Interrupted. The London based duo-turned-quartet enticed us with their lush cinematic soundscapes blending beguilingly classical arrangements and electronics. They spontaneously brought an interesting twist to our mixtape by presenting the tracks in a chronological order, from the oldest to the most recent. So strap yourself in for a journey through time and music.

Mixtape #49

Earlier this year, we were stunned by the new album from Bristolian quartet Get The Blessing. They won us over with their wonderful blend of sounds drawing from jazz to pop and electronica. So this month we've asked them to put together our mixtape and even though they were busy (and still are) touring Europe, they obliged. And we're sure glad they did, press play already!
