Düsseldorf-based composer, songwriter and experimental musician Hauschka has released ‘Inventions’, the new single from his forthcoming album Philanthropy, ahead of its release on October 20th through City Slang. ‘Inventions’ comes paired with an accompanying video directed by Wataru Sato and filmed around various locations in Japan. Of the video, Hauschka comments:
“The video provides a captivating glimpse into the multifaceted aspects of everyday life in Japan. It skillfully captures both the fast-paced, hyper-modern lifestyle and the serene moments deeply rooted in its rich history and culture, finding expression in poetry and carpentry. It showcases that there’s not one answer, and that joy and serenity can be found in everything, from arts and crafts to the meticulous work of a train conductor.”
Sato also had this to say about it:
“When people from all over the world think of Japan, they probably envision Tokyo with its towering skyscrapers. However, in this video, I’ve turned our focus to towns and individuals who hold their culture in high regard, and to those who, upon recognizing the beauty of this culture, create something anew. My intention was to highlight that these often-overlooked people and cultural aspects play a pivotal role in our society. With Japan’s diverse culture and landscapes, we hope that, through the medium of sound, it can be appreciated by audiences worldwide.”
November 3rd will see the release of Resavoir‘s self-titled album through International Anthem. In the works for over three years, the upcoming album saw the producer and composer Will Miller, who leads the project, enlist a stellar cast of collaborators from the Chicago music community, including Akenya, Matt Gold, Eddie Burns, Lane Beckstrom, Jeremy Cunningham, Irvin Pierce, Macie Stewart, Peter Manheim, Elton Aura, Whitney and more. As the press release describes, “Resavoir is a subtly radiant symphony interweaving modern-day soul-jazz with bedroom beats, synth serenades and twilight sonatas”.
Ahead of the album’s release, Resavoir have launched their new track, ‘Sunset’, the third single from their album, following previous singles ‘Sunday Morning’ (featuring Elton Aura & Whitney) and ‘Inside Minds’. ‘Sunset’ is offered with a stop motion video made by Toronto-based experimental animation artist and director Nik Arthur using glass and a handheld steamer. Speaking about the video, Arthur comments:
“As blue changes to yellow, orange, and then red, steam clouds roam around a window and form shapes, with the falling sun as their audience. Two frames pass for every one synth note, creating a feel of change as gradual as the song, and the sunset.”

Sam Gendel stands as one of the most ambitious and creative musicians out there, maintaining a constant prolific recording output, both solo and with collaborators. The multi-instrumentalist and producer is ready to release a new collaborative album this friday, which sees him team up with filmmaker and visual artist Marcella Cytrynowicz. Entitled AUDIOBOOK, the album features 13 alphabetically-named tracks, each with a corresponding illustration, “that feel like dispatches from outer space, or unearthed ancient runes”, as the press release describes. Cytrynowicz drew the illustrations freehand on 8.5×11 pieces of paper, and at the same time Gendel composed the music next to her, using mostly a Suzuki Waraku III. “It makes it easy to explore,” Gendel explained. “In the same way Marcella describes how she draws, I sort of unlock these weird puzzles in my own mind, and sometimes just having one interface to deal with takes that mental pressure off. It has a strange quality sonically, too… I just gravitate toward that.”
Speakig about the visual album, Gendel adds:
“It’s the sound of us just individually trusting ourselves, and then aligning the two together and letting them meet, and also trusting in that. I don’t think about it that directly, though – this isn’t art inspired by art. I would say this is just a piece showing two people trusting in their subconscious and then trusting in that meeting point, wherever that is. And shepherding it along.”
Gendel and Cytrynowicz shared today the third and final single from AUDIOBOOK ahead of its release on October 6th through Psychic Hotline. It follows previous singles ‘CD’ and ‘IJ’. Listen to them all below.
Sandro Perri unveiled Off World in 2016, a 3-volume project assembling a collection of his collaborative work with other producers over the past decade. 1 and 2 both made it to our Album Picks of the Year when they came out in 2016 and 2017 respectively, so release news of the final volume in the trilogy fills us with excitement. On the upcoming 3, the unrelentingly inventive musician assembles first time collaborations with Nicole Rampersaud (trumpet) and Martin Arnold (guitar), as well with previous contributors Jesse Zubot (violin) and Drew Brown, Matthew Cooper, Susumu Mukai and Andrew Zukerman on electronics.
3 features longer tracks than the previous volumes, with three of its five tracks clocking in around 10 minutes, “where overtly improvised instrumental playing wends its way across alternately bubbling and woozy electronic beds”, as the press release describes.
One of these longer tracks, ‘Impulse Controller’, emerges today as the first tantalizing single from the album. The track is described as a “languidly skewed rhumba where ambling melodic undercurrents and dubby electronic pointillism provide a dulcet promenade for Rampersaud’s Miles-esque trumpet excursions.” Take a listen below.
