Supersilent set to release new album next month, share first cut ‘13.9’

Supersilent - 13Norway’s improvisational avant-jazz ensemble Supersilent have been steadily releasing exquisite albums for nearly two decades. Their most recent album, 2014’s 12, is now being followed up by 13. Helge Sten, Arve Henriksen and Ståle Storløkken, who make up the trio, recorded it live, as the album blurb describes, “while blasting their sound through a PA system, so that they can feel the physical air moving as if they were on stage”. They have evolved and adjusted to being a trio since the departure of drummer Jarle Vespestad in 2009, and we now find “all three often handling their respective instruments as if they were percussion, stabbing buttons and keys in real time”.

13 arrives on September 30th via Smalltown Supersound, and ahead of it, we can already hear the sublime ‘13.9’. Take a listen now.

Tanya Tagaq details upcoming new album Retribution

Tanya Tagaq - RetributionMesmerizing Inuit artist Tanya Tagaq has announced a new album, the follow-up to her breathtaking Polaris Prize winning album Animism. Two years on from its release, the aptly titled Retribution is described as being “even more musically aggressive, more aggressively political”, an album informed, documenting and protesting environmental and human rights violations and abuse, and many other issues that affect all of us. Retribution “is about rape: rape of women, rape of the land, rape of children, despoiling of traditional lands without consent”, says the press release, “it’s about rejecting the toxic, militaristic outlook that’s taken over the world since the rise of Western industrial capitalism, and is rapidly destroying human life support systems through climate change and pollution.”

To bring the record to life, Tagaq collaborated with a slew of stellar artists, including violinist Jesse Zubot, who also produced the record, drummer Jean Martin, Tuvan throat singer Radik Tyülyüsh, rapper Shad, traditional Inuk singer Ruben Komangapik, and her own young daughter Inuuja.

Retribution arrives on October 21st in North America and November 18th in Europe via Six Shooter but we can already hear the first single. The poignant and intense ‘Aorta’, previously shared as an accompaniment to footage shot at the Emmanuel Vigeland Museum in Oslo, Norway, is now streaming.

Adam Betts announces debut solo album Colossal Squid

Adam Betts - Colossol SquidThere’s exciting news from drumming powerhouse Adam Betts, who’s also one third of long time favourite band Three Trapped Tigers. Comes November 25th, the ingenious London based drummer will release his debut solo album, Colossal Squid, via Blood & Biscuits.
Betts plays challenging electronic rhythms with astonishing precision, having for years explored “the boundaries between electronic and live music, and celebrating the flaws thrown up when one tries to replicate the other”, as the press release describes. Some of his influences include Aphex Twin, Autechre, Arca and Oneohtrix Point Never.
Colossal Squid was originally written, developed and recorded over the course of a few months, but its actual final recording resulted from one live session. “It clicked that this was the way to represent the material in the best way possible – performed entirely live, as it happened. Any “mistakes”, any looseness, felt like a step away from the feeling of material being written with the click of a mouse at a computer.” explained Betts. “It’s really a punk album with tape delays instead of guitar chords.”

November may seem a long way away but we can already get a first taste of what Betts will be throwing at us with the insane opening track ‘Drumbones’.
