Listen to a brand new Mwahaha track, ‘Wine Cooler’

Mwahaha

We’ve been eagerly waiting to hear new material from Oakland based outfit Mwahaha since their outstanding self-titled debut album came out. First self-released in 2011 and reissued last year through Plug Research, Mwahaha remains an absolute all-time favourite record well into this year.
They have been busy preparing its follow-up and finally we can rejoice, for they have just shared a colossal new instrumental track called ‘Wine Cooler’. A sonic wonderland, ‘Wine Cooler’ is gentle but powerful, dark but scintillating, delving into psychedelic krautrock territories full of melodic synth washes reminiscent of German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk. Gala Drop return with second full-length album

Gala Drop - II

Portuguese psych experimentalist outfit Gala Drop are back with a new album, their first in over six years. The new effort, II, is set to be released on November 24th via Golf Channel Recordings.
Gala Drop recruited Detroit ex-pat Jerry The Cat (Parliament, Funkadelic, John Lee Hoker) as a guest collaborator. “It’s as a vocalist he makes his mark on II”, says the press release, adding that “his dub-smeared murmurs and galvanizing cries push[ing] Gala Drop even further away from the introspective, delay-pedal drone duo they started out as nearly a decade ago”.
Ahead of the album’s release, Gala Drop have dropped two cuts off it, the ‘Sun Gun’ and ‘You And I’, the latter being offered with a video by Pedro Maia. Listen to both tracks below.

Kaki King unveils video for ‘Tunnel’ off new rarities album

Kaki King - TunnelEarlier this week, Brooklyn based guitar virtuoso Kaki King released a collection of unreleased cuts spanning material from the last decade. Entitled Everybody Glows: B-Sides & Rarities, it features 15 tracks including B-sides, demos, covers and rarities, “culled from scratched demo CDs, long forgotten hard drives, and the fuzzier corners of her memory”, as the blurb explains. “The collection reveals the evolution of her songwriting while offering a glimpse of a young guitarist doing daring things on her instrument before she grasped the significance of any of it.”
Coinciding with the release, King has shared a fantastic video to accompany the outstanding and hypnotic ‘Tunnel’. The track has never been released before and it was recorded during King’s 2004 Legs To Make Us Longer sessions. Here it is.

Everybody Glows: B-Sides & Rarities can be ordered on bandcamp.

Troyka’s third album, Ornithophobia, out in January

Troyka - Ornithophobia

Guitarist Chris Montague, keyboard player Kit Downes and drummer Josh Blackmore make up the experimental jazz trio Troyka. With two fantastic and ambitious records under their belt, they’ve have announced the release of their third studio album aptly named Ornithophobia, after guitarist Chris’ real fear of birds. Its title track paved the way for the whole album, which is set in a fictionalised London according to the press release, “a post-apocalyptic dystopian nightmare in which people have contracted a form of avian flu that is slowly turning them into human-size birds and gradually making them lose their minds”. Quoting influences like Tim Berne, Aphex Twin, Deerhoof, Albert King and Flying Lotus, Troyka push boundaries creating a unique world of their own that is both accessible yet unpredictable, warm yet dark, subtle yet groovy.
Ornithophobia arrives on January 26th via Naim Jazz. Here’s an album teaser to get you excited for this release.
