Wires Under Tension drop free track ahead of American mini-tour

Wires Under Tension

Wires Under Tension, the duo of multi-instrumentalist/composer Christopher Tignor and drummer Theo Metz, are about to embark on a mini-tour in the US. To celebrate and entice us, Tignor is offering a free download of ‘The Hustle’, a track he composed for the Art in Odd Places Festival last year. Artists involved in this project were asked to create audio works associated with a specific location along 14th Street in New York. Tignor’s contribution, ”The Hustle’, was recorded at BWAY/14th St’s south-west corner of a guy hustling umbrellas in the rain. Listen to it now and get yourself to one of their shows. You can check all their dates after the cut.

Tour Dates:

10/19/2013 Chicago, IL @ Ultra Lounge

Julianna Barwick speeds forward with live shows following the release of Nepenthe

Julianna Barwick - "Crystal Lake (Live At Judson Church)"

After releasing her second studio LP Nepenthe under Dead Oceans at the end of August this year, Julianna Barwick didn’t waste time and hit the road with countless live shows around the world. She is still due to perform in six venues in the US in October and then comes back to Europe starting with Unsound Festival in Kraków, Poland. She will also visit Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Belgium and France. She teases us with the newly released video of her live performance at Judson Church in NY from the day Nepenthe was released. Calming sounds of her wondering notes peacefully executed by silent Icelanders makes everyone daydream about minimalistic mind escapades into the lands of harmony and reverie.

Matana Roberts releases Coin Coin‘s second instalment

Matana Roberts - Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile

Chicago-born, New York-based extraordinary alto saxophonist, composer, improviser and sound experimentalist Matana Roberts releases today the second instalment from her ongoing experimental project Coin Coin, following her 2011’s Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres.
Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile is driven by an aesthetic practice that Matana calls ‘panoramic sound quilting’ and conjures “some of the most nuanced, thoughtful and substantial American liberation music of the 21st century” as the press release notes.

Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres saw Matana collaborating with more than a dozen Montréal musicians involved in the experimental and avant-rock scenes, including label mates Godspeed You! Black Emperor!. Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile is a more intimate affair featuring a New York jazz sextet comprising pianist Shoko Nagai, trumpeter Jason Palmer, double bass player Thomson Kneeland, drummer Tomas Fujiwara and operatic tenor singer Jeremiah Abiah.

The long running Coin Coin project is far from finished, and Matana plans to release another 10 chapters. Right now, we can indulge our ears with Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile, available on vinyl, CD and digitally via Constellation. You can also head over to The Wire to stream the entire album, and listen to two magnificent cuts, ‘amma jerusalem school’ and ‘for this is’ beneath.
