Waterstrider - Twice

Nate Salman, Drew Brown, Scott Brown, Brijean Murphy and Walker Johnson make up Oakland based outfit Waterstrider. Our first taste of their music comes in the shape of an incredible cover of ‘Twice’, the very excellent and sensual track by Little Dragon. Waterstrider used two field recordings from a farm in Ithaca, New York to mark an astounding change halfway through the song, as if the night turned into day. “As the sun comes up, and with it the diurnal fauna, we chant a mantra that affirms our individuality on this planet”, explained the band. “We are in control of our own fate, defined only by our own dreams and intentions.”.

Allured by this cover, I directed my ears to Waterstrider’s bandcamp. Their two EP’s released to date, Wind​-​Fed Fire and Constellation, amalgamate an array of genres and influences from all over the place into a distinctly original and infectious sound. Waterstrider are gearing up to release their debut full-length album later this year and we’ll keep our ears peeled for more updates.

Shivum Sharma shares Kwes produced debut single ‘Flicker’

Last Autumn, 18-year old London native Shivum Sharma unleashed his first demo song entitled ‘Flicker’. Originally a beautifully bedroom crafted piano and vocal affair, ‘Flicker’ has now been given the polishing treatment by Warp Records’ artist/producer extraordinaire Kwes. The track is getting its own EP, Flicker EP, slated for a March 3rd release via National Anthem. Now listen to ‘Flicker’ below.

Tinariwen premiere video for new track ‘Imidiwan Ahi Sigdim’

Tinariwen - Imidiwan Ahi Sigdim

February 11th will see the release of Tinariwen‘s new full-length album Emmaar via ANTI- Records. Recorded over three weeks in Joshua Tree, California, the follow up to Tinariwen’s 2011 album Tassili is the first album the band recorded away from Mali due to the turmoil in the country. “This is the first time we are recording out of Africa it has to be in a desert,” said bassist Eyadou Ag Leche. “We would like to live in peace in the North of Mali, but this is very difficult, there is no administration, no banks, no food, no gas. Joshua Tree is in the high desert of California, we love all the desert, these are places where we feel good to live and to create.”
Emmaar features guest contributions from poet Saul Williams, Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Matt Sweeney from Chavez and Nashville fiddler Fats Kaplin.

Sabina set to release debut album Toujours

What a pleasant surprise! The multitalented and multilingual Sabina Sciubba, best known as the co-founder and lead singer of critically acclaimed New York based band Brazilian Girls, is ready to release her debut solo album, Toujours. The effort sees Sabina recruiting Brazilian Girls producer Frederik Rubens to assist in the recording and production duties. She explained the process:

“I started this project on the acoustic guitar, as an escape, in a way, from the party music I’ve been doing for some time. But after a while I felt like I had gone off too far, I was out in the woods, so I came back to the city—And the city was Paris. Frederik and I started working on a few of the songs with an electric guitar. It took a more rock, more lavish direction, still intimate, but not sleepy. It felt right.”

Toujours will hit stores on February 18 via Bar/None Records in the US and on March 24th in the UK via Naim Edge. The album’s title track had already been unveiled with an amusing accompanying video, and now Sabina is offering another excellent taste of the album with ‘Viva L’amour’. Enjoy both tracks below.


Adult Jazz share second single ‘Am Gone’

Adult Jazz had already enticed us with the wonderful track ‘Springful’, lifted from their double A-side ‘Am Gone’ / ‘Springful’ 12″. This release came out earlier this week via the quartet’s own imprint Spare Thought and you can grab your copy on their bandcamp.
