Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek release new single, ‘Gümüş’, from upcoming album Dost 2

Anatolian psych-folk quartet Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek released last year DOST 1, the first of a two part album series.  Its follow-up, Dost 2, arrives on November 11th through Les Disques Bongo JoeCatapulte Records and the Hamburg based outfit is enticing us with the gorgeous and bucolic new single ‘Gümüş’, which means ‘Silver’. As the band describes, it “is used here to depict a particular state of the soul, between life and death”. The track comes with an accompanying video and you can watch it below.

Kosmo Sound announce second album, Fruit of the Void

Belgian dub-jazz outfit Kosmo Sound began performing and recording together in 2017, with bassist Mattias Geernaert and drummer Marius Couvreur initially bonding over a mutual and abiding appreciation for dub. Soon after they became a sextet with the addition of guitarists Edmund Lauret and Cyriel Vandenabeele, keyboard player Bos Debusscher and saxophonist Ambroos De Schepper.

They are set to release their second record, Fruit of the Void, on November 25th via Zephyrus Records. To get us excited, they have shared a buoyant and delirious single titled ‘Banoffee Pie’. Speaking about the track, they comment:

“Banoffee Pie came from the influence of toeareg grooves and the power of pentatonic melodies. The track is one big trip that is trying to capture the idea of something tribal, something ‘earthy’ while blending the cosmic sounds of the band itself.”

Lori Goldston’s new album, High and Low, out now; watch the video for third single ‘We Miss You and Wish You Well’

Yesterday saw the release of Lori Goldston‘s much anticipated new album High and Low through SofaBurn. Goldston had also shared a third single from the record titled ‘We Miss You and Wish You Well’. The track comes with an accompanying video directed by Clyde Petersen, who had also directed the video for her first riveting single ‘The Waves and What’s Under’. Speaking about the video, he commented:

“This super8mm footage was shot on a flight from Burbank, California to Seattle, Washington. I was returning home from guest lecturing at the animation department at CalArts. I was in production on a documentary film about the band Earth at the time and often found myself shooting footage out of airplane windows and moving cars. As I boarded the plane, I saw Seattle film director Megan Griffiths and Erik Estrada (Ponch from CHiPS) in first class. Seated next to me in the main cabin was Mark L. Walberg, host of the reality show Temptation Island. I was trying not to freak out the entire time, because I was a big ‘Temptation Island’ fan in college.

As we approached the Northwest and Mount Rainier, I saw what I believe to be the most beautiful clouds I have ever seen in my entire life. Fluffy and gigantic, towering over the plane. I grabbed my camera and began to film them out the window. Mark was surprised to see me shooting actual film and we had quite a fun chat. I still have not seen a more perfect cloud in my life, and I believe I may never. I am ok with that. These were stunning. As I approached this music video, Lori informed me that the song was about our friend Geneviève Castrée. To celebrate her with these perfect clouds felt right. She would have liked the view.”

GoGo Penguin release new single ‘Erased By Sunlight’

Photo: Emily Dennison

Last July GoGo Penguin gifted us with their magnificent Between Two Waves EP. Now the incredible and quirky jazz trio are following it with a stunning new track called ‘Erased by Sunlight’, which was recorded a mere a couple of months ago at Real World Studios, where they had also recorded the EP. Speaking about the track, pianist Chris Illingworth comments:

“Often, following your instincts can be the right thing to do, sometimes what feels like instinct can be the years of experience pushing you quickly in the right direction. But sometimes it’s fun to feel those instincts and see what happens when you go down another path, moving away from the road that seems obvious. That’s how this new track found its initial sound, a few musical fragments discovered through exploring ideas that may have been ignored or never found which we then used as a new starting point, allowing instinct to kick back in, leading us to Erased by Sunlight.”

‘Erased by Sunlight’ is out now through XXIM Records/Sony and you can listen to it below.

In other related news, GoGo Penguin have announced several live dates in the UK/EU this Autumn, taking in shows in Paris, Berlin, London, Athens and Amsterdam, amongst many other cities. Head over here to check all their stops.

Sarathy Korwar previews upcoming album, Kalak, with new single ‘Remember Begum Rokheya’

Sarathy Korwar is set to release his much-anticipated new album Kalak in November and back in August he had already shared the phenomenal and fiery lead single ‘Utopia Is A Colonial Project’. Now the the percussionist, producer and composer has released a second track from the album titled ‘Remember Begum Rokheya’. Kalak celebrates South Asian music and literature, and the new single sees Korward honouring the life of Bengali feminist writer Begum Rokheya and highlighting the importance and impact that marginalised voices from the past and the present can have on the future. Korward comments:

“When speaking about futurism, one of the fundamental questions is – who gets to speculate? Who gets to tell their story or vision of the future? Begum Rokheya is an example of someone with a radically different worldview and someone who we would generally not hear from. In her 1905 book Sultana’s Dream, she tells the story of reversed purdah, where peace-loving women overpower aggressive men to live in harmony with nature.”

He continues:

“The song is based on a simple, call and response melody, paying homage to its folk music origins. The group vocals are performed by friends and family, to reflect the song’s emphasis on community.”

Listen to ‘Remember Begum Rokheya’ below and be sure to grab Kalak when it drops on November 11th through The Leaf Label.
